Survey Finds Japan's Top Baby Names for 2022
A company has released its rankings of Japan's top baby names in 2022, based on the results of a survey.
The survey was done by Tamahiyo, a brand focused on babies and new mothers, owned by Benesse Holdings. The company has released its baby name rankings every year since 2005.
The results for 2022 were based on the names of nearly 300,000 babies born to Tamahiyo customers between January and September.
"Ao" — also read as "Aoi" — was the most popular name for boys, up from seventh place in 2021. The kanji character for this name means "blue" or "green," and is often used to refer to the sky or the sea.
Two kanji characters that mean "sun" and "hollyhock," a type of flower, made up the most popular name for girls. Together, the characters are often read as "Himari" or "Hinata," and the name has been in first place for seven years.
Rioko Kurihara, who studies the meanings of names, told the company that a lot of parents in 2022 chose names associated with nature and peace. This may have been because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty it brought.
Names that included the kanji character for "tiger" were also higher up in the rankings because 2022 was the Year of the Tiger, The Japan Times reported.

会話に役立つ表現

bun in the oven
bun in the oven は、女性が妊娠していることを表す表現です。オーブン（子宮）の中にお饅頭（赤ちゃん）が入っているようなイメージを表していますね。ただし、かなりくだけた表現なので、親しい間柄だけで使うようにしたほうがいいでしょう。

trimester
40週の妊娠期間を3等分したときに、それぞれの約3カ月間をtrimesterと呼びます。最初の3カ月（妊娠初期）が the first trimester、次の3カ月（妊娠中期）がthe second trimester、臨月までの最後の3カ月（妊娠後期）がthe third/last trimesterとなります。

due date
赤ちゃんが生まれる予定日のことをdue dateと言います。

baby shower
Baby showerは、妊婦さんのために開かれるパーティーです。妊婦と生まれてくる赤ちゃんのために浴びせるようにプレゼントを用意するのでこのように呼ばれています。最近は日本でも聞かれるようになりましたね。多くの場合、the last trimester（第3期）に行われます。
I still need to buy a gift for Amy's baby shower this weekend.
（週末のエイミーのベビーシャワーのプレゼントをこれから買わなくちゃ）

Emma: We have a few in mind, but we're still in the process of deciding. Oh, and by the way, I'll be having a baby shower in October. You should come along!レベッカ： ねえ、エマ、あなたとビリーに赤ちゃんができたんですってね。おめでとう！
