Martin Scorsese: I was given the book by Archbishop Paul Moore of the Episcopal Church in New York. Um, and I had been involved at that point in making a film that had religious themes called “The] Last Temptation of Christ”※1. Religion has always been a [major part of my life, and dealing with it, even in the films I’ve made about the underworld, I’ve found that I still needed to go further into something that cannot be described in words, uh, which really has to do with faith.

And so , from the point at which I read the book, which I ? here in Japan, actually ? I was working with , uh, Akira Kurosawa on , uh, “Dreams,” ※2 and I finished the book here. I felt that, uh, a?after finishing the book, I felt that this was the, the story that would take me further into, uh, my kind of a quest for , uh, spirituality, but I didn’t know how to do it, so we started working on the script a couple of years later. And, uh, been a long story, but ultimately , the script was written in 2006.

I don’t know if I succeeded, but I really felt I didn’t know how to convey what the book has. And maybe it’s just the experience of having the extra 20 years of living, uh, uh, being a father, um, uh, husband, uh, restoring films, uh, and, and growing with the novel we dare make the attempt at, uh, putting it on film.

※1 “The Last Temptation of Christ” 邦題『最後の誘惑』。

Scorsese: We held all our auditions here. So , we cast most of the film at that time except for Kichijiro and, um, the interpreter. The film would start and stop and start and stop. And during one of those times, we saw a video of you※1 doing, uh, Kichijiro. And this is a very difficult, uh, it’s all, all the casting is difficult, but Kichijiro is a very special character in that, um, he's described a certain way in the book, and we wanted to make it fresh and new.

And, uh, my casting director said, “ Look at this new video we have of this, uh, this young actor.” But I think what really came through in that, uh, that audition on video was the intensity ? uh, the intensity and the, the honest emotion, uh, and understanding of Kichijiro that Yosuke had. And in a sense , we saw Kichijiro beginning to form in front of our eyes.

Then we met you in person , and he came in already doing the part in the hotel room. So Ellen※2 and I said, “I think this is the guy.” But then there I think we met you for the same role , actually .

Tadanobu Asano: Yes.

Scorsese: You came in, you read for Kichijiro, right ?

Asano: Yes.

Scorsese: So we were thinking, and Ellen said, “Have him come back and read for the interpreter.” I said, “All right ,” and it fit perfectly.

But overall, uh, with , with , both of them, of course , uh, was the confidence I had, um, in them to perform or to be these characters, uh, under the difficult circumstances of shooting. And somehow, despite my not knowing any Japanese, I think you’re right , Asano, there was kind of an understanding between us that we could give each other looks, ha-ha, and move a certain way. Uh, there was an unsaid language.

Scorsese: In the process of making the film, i?it became really in my mind, uh, really obviously became like a pilgrimage to faith, for me. And it’s still a struggle. You’re not blessed with it all the time. It is something that one strives towards. I think, uh, um, thinking about faith, writing about it, making films about it, dealing with what we are as human beings, whether we are inherently good or bad or both , all of these, uh, all of these things come together to … It’s a search for faith. I don’t know if we’ll ever find it, but it’s a continual search.

Of course , uh, it’s fascinating to me in the story, uh, because of the difference in the cultures. I wanted to get past everything to understand or to embrace the very essence of faith. That is what the, um, the dogma of, um, the Catholicism had to be , sort of , uh, chipped away at to find the real core of faith.
