" Shall we light the paper lanterns and display peach blossoms?"♪ Hinamatsuri is a festival when we display hina dolls and pray for young girls' growth and happiness. The custom began during the Heian period and the dolls were dressed in gorgeous ancient court attire. Usually the dolls are placed on seven steps, hinadan, with the emperor and empress at the top, followed by three ladies of the court and five court musicians lower down. We also display peach blossoms, rice cake cubes and diamond-shaped rice cakes on the steps. Well , why do we display these dolls? I will tell you why.

Hinamatsuri traces its origins to an ancient Japanese custom called hina-nagashi. In this custom hina dolls are set afloat on a river to the sea, supposedly taking the troubles or bad spirits of the girls who own them. People believed the dolls possessed the power to contain bad spirits; however , people tend not to follow the nagashi-bina custom these days to avoid polluting the sea. Therefore , if you do follow the custom, it can be quite controversial , and spectators may find and bring the dolls back to the temple to burn them.

There are many setsubun events held in different temples and shrines. The following are some examples.

Some people do still believe, however , that a doll can take a girl's bad fortune and the custom displaying hina dolls still exists. So , they also believe that you had better not use your ancestors' hina dolls to pray for a girl's happiness. Nevertheless , we do still keep nice dolls from our ancestors as beautiful ornaments, even after they have finished their work of taking away all the bad fortune from a girl.

Answer

Hina dolls supposedly take away the bad fortune of the girl who owned them. It is said that it's better to have your own set of hina dolls rather than take over a set from your mom or ancestors.
