Seasonal traditions on New Year's Eve

Many Japanese people watch seasonal programs such as Nihon Rekodo Taisho (or "Japan Records Awards") on TBS and Kohaku Uta Gassen on NHK, (which is on air until 23:45, right before the jyoya no kane or end of year bell starts ringing in the end of year). Popular artists are usually scheduled to appear on both programs. They used to appear on Nihon Rekodo Taisho first and then run to Kohaku Uta Gassen to be able to appear on both until Nihon Rekodo Taisho was moved to the 30th in 2006. Let’s take a look at the significant features of each program.

Nihon Rekodo Taisho

Nihon Rekodo Taisho, which started in 1959 influenced by the American Grammy Awards, is one of the major Japanese music award shows. It is held annually on December 30th in the late afternoon. One winning Japanese song is selected based on its musical qualities, the skill of the singer, sales of the CD and other criteria. Besides the Best Record Award, there are also other awards such as a prize for the best new singer, a best song award and so on. Ayumi Hamasaki and EXILE both hold the record for the most wins, with three awards each.

紅白歌合戦 Kohaku Uta Gassen (Kohaku)

Kohaku is an annual music show which is broadcast on December 31st until 23:45, just before the seasonally traditional jyoya no kane start ringing. The show is a long running TV tradition having been started in 1951 by NHK.

Content: The show is a singing contest between two teams. Popular artists, who had hit songs during the year, are selected. The artists are divided into two teams, red and white based on gender. Female artists are on the red team and male are on the white team. If a group have both male and female members, they will be on the team of the main vocalist’s gender. If the group is a duo featuring a man and a woman, they are usually assigned to the red team.

Audience ratings: One notable feature of the program is its high viewer ratings. It has been the most watched New Year’s Eve show since the first year it was broadcast.

Performances: There are many performances intended to surprise the audience. The competitors used to wear glitzy costumes, to the extent that the costumes themselves became almost as elaborate as the stage set. However, in recent years, they have become more moderate in this regard.

Judges: The judges are chosen from artists and athletes who have been successful throughout the year. Also, members of the audience and TV viewers, chosen in advance, help with the judging. You can vote using a cellphone or a bidirectional TV system these days.

紅白歌合戦の最後に「蛍の光」が流れると、今年もあと少し。そして、除夜の鐘が鳴り始めて、0時をまわると……いよいよ2014年です! いい年になりますように。
